Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid-clinical and pathologic study

Abstract

|
Authors have recently experienced a case of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid in Pusan Gospel Hospital. The followings are summary of the case. 1. The clinical course of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid is protected, even after incomplete removal of the carcinoma. The case received three surgical interventions during 10 years period and an external irradiation after the first surgical removal.
2. Treatment of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid is basically identical to that of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. This consists of a total thyroidectomy in continuity with radical neck dissection.
3. Histologic diagnosis of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid rests upon the demonstration of amyloid in the tumor tissue. The carcinoma cells are undifferentiated in type. Two types of the carcinoma cells are usually present, one being spindle and the other polyhedral in shape.
